Some trees list James' birth in Mecklenburg County, NC, but that would not fit with dates of father's history in Pennsylvania at the time.
Local government assigned nicknames to distinguish in tax rolls the various men named James Orr. Thus, James "Jockey" Orr is distinct from James "Whistling" Orr and James "Heretick" Orr.
James 'Jockey' Orr appeared in the tax rolls of Mecklenburg County in Capt. Wallis' Company in 1797. I believe he must have been a member of the line of Orrs that lived in the area of Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church."

"In Book E. of Mecklenburg County, NC Wills by Herman A. Ferguson, 1990, Will 415, page 56 of Book E, it gives James (Jockey) Orr's Will dated 16 Oct 1806, probated in Apr 1808. It includes daughters Agness Plummer, Margaret Alexander, and sons John. A Orr and Nathan F. Orr and grandson James W. Plummer. No mention of a Wife, prob. deceased."

"George Allen was a neighbor on Sugar Creek. He might be the father or brother of Hannah Allen. He witnessed wills for the Orrs and vice versa. There were adjacent properties between James Jockey Orr and George Allen. Some of the time the John A. Orr, son of Jockey, was mentioned in deeds as Allen Orr."

John and Jane provided a home for various lengths of time to several children. Some were grandchildren. Some were born into neighboring homes. Others may have been born into related Orr or Allen families, perhaps households of cousins in North Carolina. In respect for the importance of extended family, all children listed below without known parents will be viewed in this archive as direct descendants of John and Jane Orr.
- male, name unknown, b. 1804-1810, John A. Orr's household of 1820, but not thereafter
- 2 females, names unknown, b. 1820-1825, John A. Orr's household of 1830, but not thereafter
- 1 female, name unknown, b. 1815-1820, John A. Orr's household of 1830, but not thereafter
- Sally C. Orr, b. 1826, John A. Orr's household of 1840 and 1850. Sally does not correspond perfectly to a census age bracket in John's 1830 household; she may have been one of two daughters listed in the next older age bracket (a disparity of only a few years).
- Elizabeth Orr, b. abt. 1831, John A. Orr's household of 1840 and 1850; she could be a daughter of John A. Orr or, more likely, his granddaughter.
- William Newton Carter, b. abt. 1840, son of William Levi Carter and Margaret Orr, said to have been raised by this Orr grandparents per Carter oral history.
- Narcissa Carter, b. abt. 1842, daughter of William Levi Carter and Margaret Orr, John A. Orr's household of 1850.
- Nathan Orr, b. abt. 1842, John A. Orr's household of 1850 — if he were the child of John and Jane Orr, then he would have been a late-in-life love child.
Mecklenburg County, North Carolina
- John Allen Orr, m. married Jane Mitchell, Jan. 14, 1811
- bondsman: Hankin Alexander, Isaac Alexander
John A. Orr settled near Nashville, Tennessee, between 1807 and 1810. John's listing in the 1810 census indicates that he had an established home, which was large enough to house temporarily a guest family with two adults and two children. It was to this home that John brought Jane Mitchell, after their marriage in 1811 in North Carolina. John's Tennessee household appears in census records through 1840. By 1845, however, he had relocated his household to Tippah County, Mississippi.

Care is needed in interpreting records for men named John Orr in Tippah County, Mississippi. Two men with that name were there then: John A. Orr b. ~1783 NC and John Jehu Orr b. ~1786 NC. Some records published online inaccurately list Jane Mitchel as the wife of John Jehu Orr; his wife was another woman named Jane. The following outline, supplied by David Webb,(20) for the line of John Jehu Orr may help to distinguish the two John Orrs.

- Sally C. Orr — speculated, unconfirmed
- Elizabeth Orr — speculated, unconfirmed
- Martha Orr, b. abt. 1835 — speculated, unconfirmed
- Nathan Orr, b. abt. 1842 — speculated, unconfirmed
These four children may have originally been known by the surname of their father, but were listed in 1850 Federal census records for Tippah County, Mississippi, with the Orr surname simply due to their presence in the John Orr household. That argument, however, is weak, as John A. Orr's Tippah County household then includes John's grandchild with a Carter surname. A stronger argument may be that the four children were born outside of a marriage and assumed their mother's Orr surname.

They are listed with Carter surname in William Carter's household in the 1870 Federal census, Prairie County, Arkansas.(22) However, subsequent records of these children appear with the Orr surname.(23)

— Helen Hughes, Nov. 4, 1998, Little Rock, Arkansas
The 1880 census identifes David Montgomery's mother-in-law as Sarah Carter, age 40, born in Arkansas. This record is not an accurate record for David Montgomery's mother-in-law, Mississippi-born Elizabeth Carter, age 49-50 in 1880. Nor does can this record match Elizabeth's sister, Mississippi-born Sally C. Orr, whose age would have been about 54 in 1880 This census record bears further research.

Sample Orr
d. bef. 1792 (not mentioned in his mother's will of that year)
It would be a major accomplishment to keep track of the various men out of North Carolina with this name. The name occured as the Sample and Orr families married regularly.
"My gggGrandfather was Sample Orr, b 1797 NC. I have found one Sample Orr born that date in Mecklenburg who married Hester Salts... I have Hester Salts' mothers' maiden name as Sample... There may be at least two other Sample Orrs in the same area at that time; one going on to Iredell Co. NC; the other to Pendleton Co. SC (adjacent to Meck. and once part of NC). Others (same? or other generation) have been located in Mo., Georgia, and Ala... I do suspect them to be all related. We'll know more if we can find the "Sample". "
— Beverly Brandon Sweeney, Orr Genforum post, May 28, 1999"I have been looking for ORR-SAMPLE marriages for several months to help explain the origin of my GGGgrandfather's name Sample Orr b 1793 NC... This is the third Orr-Sample marriage I have found, and there are about 4 to 5 Sample Orrs out there. Sample was first "Semp-Hill", then Semple, then Sample. Orr was believed to originated in the name AYR, pronounced "ORR". There were Semples who married Ayrs from the Ayr region of Ireland, whose later generations married Orrs in US...
