Migration with Cole In-laws

James and Majer Cole Dillard moved to central Missouri along with members of her Cole family. William Temple Cole and his wife Hannah, as well as Stephen Cole and his his wife, Phoebe Allison, settled near what is now Jefferson City, Missouri, in what is now Cole County. Hannah Cole, through her bravery as wife and mother through hardship imposed from Indian attacks, has honorary title of "Pioneer Mother of Missouri."

Tax Lists

The names of James Dillard and his sons Joseph and William appear in tax lists in Cooper County, Missouri, for the year 1820. (1)

Majer Dillard wrote this letter in 1842 to her daughter, Ann Dillard Fleming, in Texas. The transcription was by Susan Blair of Plano, Texas.

Booneville Mo. July 1842

My Dear Daughter --

Your kind letter of the 13th of Febry was handed me by Doctor Levin (?). It afforded me the highest degree of pleasure to hear from you and more especially to hear of your being ____ in Texas. I should be glad to see you and I truly hope that the great distance between us will not deter you from once more coming to see me before we will have to separate for ever. You might make it convenient to pay a visit while the difficulty between Mexico and Texas is in an unsettled condition. I am truly sory to hear of the fresh outbreak of the Mexicans and I hope before they ____it you will have them scouted out of the country and once more enjoy peace and happiness.

I have nothing special to tell you. Our friends here all well and getting along about as usual. There has been no deaths in the family since you last heard from us with the exception of your Aunt Hannah Cole and cousin Ellen Ashcraft. Your aunt was perfectly resigned to die and seemed to be happy. She told her friends not to grieve after her, that she was going a better and happier world in the presence of her God where we shall all meet in the day of judgement ...____... live according to his word. And now my daughter as I may never see you again let me impress upon your mind the great obligation you are under to serve your God. I want you to do that above all things - as it will be the means ...___ this world and give you eternal felicity in the world to come.

In conclusion let me request you to write as soon as possible. I shall always be glad to hear from you and I hope you will visit me shortly. I am satisfied you would be pleased to see your native land and all your old acquaintances. There has been a great change since you left. Every thing has rapidly improved. But at present business is dull on account of the extreme scarcity of money. The banks are all breaking and nothing but gold and silver is counted good. Give my love to Mr. Gates and his wife, Abraham Dillard's widow and child. And if yo come to this country (I would?) be pleased to have them come with you. Jo Dillard's children Jane and her husband I am informed she married but I do not know his name. Also Wm. Burnet and his wife. And believe me to be you Most Affectionate Mother.

Major Dillard

Joseph Dillard is believed to have moved into Texas in January of 1834. This followed the move into Texas by his brother, Abraham Dillard. This date is interesting, because on Apr. 6, 1830, Mexico issued a policy which prohibited further emigration into Texas by settlers from the United States. This policy is one of the factors which led to the Texas Revolution.

William Burnett married Susanna Beason Dillard, the widow of Joseph Dillard, between 1836 and 1856.

A drawing of lots by heirs of Joseph Dillard divided his land in Gonzales County, Texas, in a legal proceeding dated July 5, 1856, as follows: (12)

"State of Texas)
Gonzales, County)

"This indenture contract and agreement entered into this 5th day of July, A.D. 1856 between William Burnett and his wife Susan Burnett, who was the widow of Joseph Dillard, deceased, and Daniel B. Dillard, Abraham Dillard, Eliza Gates, the wife of William Dillard/Shoaf, heirs at law of said Joseph Dillard, deceased, in citation to the partition by patent No. 180, Vo. 3 bearing date of 22nd of Sept. 1845, situated in Gonzales County, State aforesaid, on the southwest side of the Guadalupe River about 8 miles from Gonzales.

"Witnesseth that for the purpose of dividing said League and Labor of land between ourselfs in an equitable manner and with as little expense as possible: William Burnett and wife, Susan, agree to take a child's part as her share. One League and one Labor to be divided into eight shares as equally as possible - about 575 acres each. Shares numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.

During the Texas Revolution, Samuel Hardin Gates fought in the battle of Gonzales. After the Mexicans won the battle at the Alamo, Gates helped Gonzales, Texas, residents burn their own buildings. This prevented critical resources from falling into the hands of the advancing Mexican army. These actions were part of a much larger strategy called the Run-A-Way Scrape.

In 1849 Samuel Hardin Gates traveled west through northern Mexico to the gold fields of California. He soon determined that the safest way to make a living there was to supply fresh-killed meat and other foods to the mining camps. He also worked in California as a gunsmith. He stayed in California for a short time and returned to his family in Texas.

In 1856 Samuel Hardin Gates built a log cabin a few miles south of Gonzales, Texas. This was a luxurious cabin for its time. It had functional double hung windows with glass, as well as cypress shingles shipped by boat from Louisiana. The home has been restored and is open to public viewing at the Pioneer Village on Highway 183 north of Gonzales, Texas.

Document Context

Parchment for the grant was prepared for the state of Texas by James Harris, a bank note engraver of 58 Nassau St., New York. The parchment has a width of 14.5 inches, a height of 13 inches, and a decorative border with a river steamboat top center and multi-sailed ships left and right center.

Standard text was engraved on the parchment. The layout of the grant reserved blank spaces for parcel details, which were written by hand in ink along inked guide lines. The parchment has an initial central vertical fold, which was been followed by three horizontal accordian folds.

The document holds two seals with circular imprints. The strongest imprint reads from the rear with "County Court" legible on an arc around a central Lone Star.

Survey terminology

  • League — in Spanish practice a league, in distance, was about 2.63 miles and, in area (a square league), about 6.92 square miles.  The Dillard grant, as one-third league, was 2.31 square miles or about 1,475 acres.
  • Vara — in Spanish practice one vara is equal to 33-1/3 inches.

"If the census taker entered his numbers properly, old 'Boon' was quite well off, as his property was valued at $11,100, and his personal property at $1,032. Those were handsome valuations for 1870."

The following article originally appeared in the 1800's in the San Antonio Daily Express. That paper reprinted this article on Saturday, March 17, 1988.

"News has reached the city of a shooting scrape near Luling several days ago, in which the principal actors were an indignant father, a determined young lover and a love sick daughter.

"William Dillard is a wealthy farmer who lives about seven miles east of the town of Luling, in Caldwell County.

"Dillard is the father of several pretty girls, one of whom so fascinated a young farmer named Rice as to cause him, after arranging the necessary preliminaries with the girl, to come out boldly and ask Pater Dillard for his daughters hand, with, of course, considerable of the old man's horses and cattle and land thrown in as pelon.

"Old Mr. Dillard told young Mr. Rice very plainly that Miss Dillard could never become Mrs. Rice. But love laughs at locksmiths, the poets say.

"Rice proceeded in good season to elope with the object of his affection. The day set was propitious.

"The young lovers were striking out across the prairie in search of a parson, but before they had gone very far, paterfamilias caught up with them and commenced firing at Rice.

"Rice returned the fire, but didn't hit his man, through in the fusilade was wounded himself.

"No arrests have been made and the matter has been kept quiet. The marriage has not yet taken place."
