Dew-Pouncey Extended Relationships
South Carolina in the 1700s to Texas in the 1900s

South Carolina

Relationships developed among several families during the late 1700's and early 1800's in the Marion District of South Carolina. Family names include Berry, Burton, Dew, and Pouncey.

This can be illustrated by documents relating to the estate of Francis Burton, who died prior to 1810. Francis Burton was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Burton. Francis Burton was predeceased by Thomas Burton, who died bef. May 27, 1774 (when Elizabeth Burton was appointed administrator of the estate of her husband). At some later time Elizabeth Burton married Roger Pouncey.

Records from 1810 show that Elizabeth Burton Pouncey acted as executor of the estate of Francis Burton. Additional executors for this estate were (1) John Dew, Sr., son of Reubin Dew and grandson of Abraham Dew, Sr., (2) Christopher Dew, Sr., son of Abraham Dew, Jr., and grandson of Abraham Dew, Sr., and (3) Henry Berry, the brother of Mary Berry Dew, the wife of Christopher Dew, Sr.

These executorships have been determined by the following excerpts from the Marion District Minute Book of the Ordinary:

  • "March 27th [1810] This Day Granted Citation to Elisabeth Pouncy & Christopher Dew Citation the Estate of Francis Burton."
  • "April 2nd.  This Day Granted Letters of Administration to Christopher Dew & Elisabeth Pouncey to administer on the Goods & Chattels of Francis Burton decd and Qualified Christopher Dew and Took his Bond for $5000 with Henry Berry & John Dew, securities."

Mississippi

Shortly after the early 1800's, the Dew and Pouncey lines branched out from South Carolina. The Mississippi branch of the Dew Line began, when John Dew, Sr., moved there abt. 1836. From John Dew, Sr., the line unfolds as follows:

  • John Dew, Sr., b. 1771 North Carolina, d. 1839 Mississippi
  • John Reubin Dew, b. 1796 South Carolina, d. 1860 Mississippi
  • John C. Dew, b. 1818 South Carolina, d. 1871 Arkansas
  • William Joseph Dew, b. 1854 Mississippi, d. 1930 Arkansas
  • Harry Lee Dew, b. 1883 Arkansas, d. 1967 Arkansas

A branch of the Mississippi Dew Line returned to South Carolina, when Elizabeth Ann Dew, b. 1828 Mississippi, married her cousin, Christopher Tobias Dew, b. 1824 South Carolina. Elizabeth Ann Dew was the daughter of John Dew, Jr., and the granddaughter of John Dew, Sr. Christopher Tobias Dew was the son of Wilson Dew and the grandson of Christopher Dew, Sr.

Arkansas

The Mississippi Dew Line moved into Arkansas. John C. Dew and William Joseph Dew, died in Arkansas, as noted above. Harry Lee Dew, son of William Joseph Dew, was born in Ashley County, where most of the Dews lived in Arkansas.

Texas

The Mississippi Dew line also branched into Texas. Thomas Tristram Dew was born in Marion County, South Carolina, a son of John Reubin Dew. Thomas Tristram Dew moved with his father to Mississippi and then moved his own family to Lavaca County, Texas, abt. 1871.

The Pouncey line stayed in South Carolina during Roger Pouncey's lifetime. However this line moved into Alabama and Texas as follows:

  • Roger Pouncey, b. 1739 Virginia, d. 1795 South Carolina
  • Samuel Pouncey, b. 1756 South Carolina, d. 1832 Alabama
  • John B. Pouncey, b. 1789, South Carolina, d. 1855, Alabama
  • Anthony Wayne Pouncey, b. 1812 Georgia, d. 1897 Texas
  • Joseph E. J. Pouncey, b. 1863 Texas, d. 1933 Texas
  • Floy P. Pouncey, b. 1892 Texas, d. 1986 Arkansas

Dew-Pouncey Marriage, 1911

Harry Lee Dew and Floy P. Pouncey, as noted above, have been thought to have met through Harry Lee Dew's business connections in Texas. However, it is known that Harry Lee Dew, while attending business college in Houston, Texas, often went to Sugarland, Texas, to visit a network of female Texas cousins who descended from Thomas Tristram Dew.

It seems quite possible that Harry Lee Dew may have learned about Floy P. Pouncey through an extended family network, which linked Dew's from Texas, Mississippi and South Carolina to Pouncey's that migrated from South Carolina to Texas. Harry Lee Dew and Floy P. Pouncey were married Jan. 22, 1911.
